Women at Banganga Water Tank — Mumbai, 2023

Acrylic on Canvas | 51 × 61 cm

This painting captures a quiet, contemplative moment at the Banganga Water Tank in Walkeshwar, Mumbai — one of the city's oldest and most sacred heritage sites. Two women, dressed in vivid saffron and gold, sit at the edge of the ancient stepped tank, their backs to the viewer, absorbed in prayer, thought, or simply the stillness of the water before them.

MINA frames the scene through a natural archway of trees and stone, drawing the eye deep into the composition — past the women, along the stepped ghats, across the shimmering green water, and into the distant crowd of worshippers gathered at the far end of the tank. Temple rooftops and a white dome rise above the treeline under a bright, open sky.

The painting celebrates the living heritage of Banganga — a place where ancient ritual, everyday life, and the rhythms of a great city coexist in quiet harmony. MINA's expressive use of colour and light transforms an act of devotion into a timeless image of stillness and belonging.

Painted during MINA's time living and working in India, this work is part of the Indian Heritage Sites Collection — a body of contemporary acrylic paintings inspired by the landscapes, waterways, gardens, markets, and cultural environments she experienced across Kerala, Mumbai, New Delhi, and beyond.

MINA's style is characterised by expressive colour, soft atmospheric light, and a deep sensitivity to place. Her paintings do not simply document — they remember. Each work carries the mood, the movement, and the quiet poetry of the moment she encountered.
