Sunrise at Lodi Garden — New Delhi, 2023
Acrylic on Canvas | 51 × 61 cm
This painting captures the quiet grandeur of Lodi Garden in New Delhi — one of India's most beloved heritage parks, where 15th-century Mughal tombs rise serenely from manicured lawns, ancient trees, and winding garden paths. At the centre of the composition stands the great domed tomb of Bara Gumbad, its grey stone facade detailed with arched niches and intricate stonework, framed by tall palms and lush green canopy.
MINA leads the viewer into the scene along a broad paved pathway, flanked by clipped hedgerows and flowering borders. To the left, a blue water point kiosk and a green sign reading "Use of Plastic Bag is Prohibited" ground the painting in the living, breathing reality of contemporary India — a place where ancient heritage and modern civic life coexist with quiet charm.
The soft, overcast light of an early morning gives the painting a calm, contemplative atmosphere. The greens are rich and layered, the stone cool and dignified, and the sky a gentle wash of white and grey that lets the architecture speak for itself.
Painted during MINA's time living and working in India, this work is part of the Indian Heritage Sites Collection — a body of contemporary acrylic paintings inspired by the landscapes, waterways, gardens, markets, and cultural environments she experienced across Kerala, Mumbai, New Delhi, and beyond.
MINA's style is characterised by expressive colour, soft atmospheric light, and a deep sensitivity to place. Her paintings do not simply document — they remember. Each work carries the mood, the movement, and the quiet poetry of the moment she encountered.
Part of the Indian Heritage Sites Collection — Landscape, Memory and Cultural Heritage.
