Osu Castle – Between Power and Sea presents one of Accra’s most historically significant coastal landmarks through MINA’s distinctive heritage scroll format.

The castle’s origins date to 1669, when Danish forces established Christiansburg Castle as a coastal trading fort. It later became a centre of colonial administration and, after Ghana’s independence, served as a seat of government and presidential residence until the seat moved to Jubilee House in 2005. Its layered history gives the landmark a continuing role in Ghana’s story of authority, governance and national memory.

Set against the Atlantic coastline, the castle occupies a powerful position between land and sea. Its architectural presence reflects its long association with authority, governance and Ghana’s evolving national history, while the surrounding water and landscape soften the monumentality of the structure and reconnect it to place.

Rendered within an aged parchment-inspired scroll, the work explores MINA’s recurring themes of heritage, memory, architecture, landscape and cultural identity. Warm ochres and archival tones contrast with the movement of the sea, creating a dialogue between permanence and change.

This work forms part of the Ghana at 70 Heritage Scroll Collection, developed in anticipation of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
