Marine Drive — Mumbai, 2023

Acrylic on Canvas | 51 × 61 cm

This painting captures one of Mumbai's most iconic and beloved vistas — the sweeping arc of Marine Drive as seen from an elevated vantage point through a canopy of lush green trees at the Hanging Garden. The city's famous crescent-shaped bay stretches across the middle distance, its shoreline tracing a graceful curve from the foreground rooftops all the way to the hazy skyline of towers, domes, and spires that define the Mumbai horizon.

MINA frames the scene with the natural architecture of overhanging branches, their feathery foliage reaching across the composition and softening the boundary between the urban and the natural. Below, a white building nestles into the hillside, partially obscured by trees, while a lone bird drifts across the middle ground. Above it all, a vast, luminous sky fills more than half the canvas — billowing clouds catching the light in soft whites and cool blues, giving the painting an open, airy quality that speaks of sea breezes and city mornings.

This is Mumbai seen not from the street, but from a moment of stillness — a pause above the noise, where the city reveals its beauty quietly and completely.

Painted during MINA's time living and working in India, this work is part of the Indian Heritage Sites Collection — a body of contemporary acrylic paintings inspired by the landscapes, waterways, gardens, markets, and cultural environments she experienced across Kerala, Mumbai, New Delhi, and beyond.

MINA's style is characterised by expressive colour, soft atmospheric light, and a deep sensitivity to place. Her paintings do not simply document — they remember. Each work carries the mood, the movement, and the quiet poetry of the moment she encountered.
