Makola Market Women 2 captures the movement, enterprise and everyday vitality of one of Accra’s most recognisable market environments.

The composition centres on a woman moving confidently through the market while carrying goods, surrounded by stalls, traders, textiles and the activity of daily commerce. Her presence becomes a symbol of labour, resilience and continuity within Ghanaian community life.

The painting also acknowledges the wider historical importance of Ghanaian market women. Beyond their commercial roles, market women contributed to social organisation, political mobilisation and support for Ghana’s independence movement, making their presence part of both everyday life and national history.

Presented within MINA’s aged, parchment-inspired scroll format, the scene is transformed into a visual archive of memory and tradition. Warm golden tones, textured surfaces, market stalls, distant figures and the central female figure create a sense of rhythm, movement and lived experience.

Through this work, MINA celebrates Ghanaian women as carriers of culture, enterprise, family life and national identity. The marketplace becomes both a place of livelihood and a symbol of resilience, community and cultural continuity.
