Makola Market Women 1 (2026)

Acrylic on Canvas | 60 × 85 cm

This painting forms part of MINA's developing Ghana Heritage Scroll Collection, an ongoing body of work exploring Ghana's monuments, cultural memory, living traditions, and national identity through the visual language of archival scrolls.

Inspired by the vibrant atmosphere of Makola Market in Accra, this work celebrates the strength, movement, and everyday presence of Ghanaian women within one of the country's most recognisable commercial and cultural spaces. The central female figure, carrying goods through the market, becomes a symbol of resilience, labour, tradition, and continuity.

Presented within an aged scroll format, the painting transforms a familiar market scene into a visual record of cultural memory. The warm earth tones, textured scroll edges, market stalls, distant figures, and atmospheric golden light create a sense of history, movement, and lived experience.

Makola Market Women 1 honours the role of women in Ghana's social and economic life while preserving the beauty of everyday cultural heritage.
