Makola Market Women 1 celebrates the energy, labour and enduring cultural presence of women within one of Accra’s most recognisable commercial and social spaces.

Inspired by the atmosphere of Makola Market, the painting places women at the centre of the composition. Traders, shoppers and figures carrying goods animate the marketplace, while the prominent woman moving through the scene becomes a symbol of resilience, enterprise and continuity.

The work also acknowledges the wider historical significance of Ghanaian market women. Beyond sustaining families and local economies, prominent market women played important roles in Ghana’s political and independence-era history through organisation, mobilisation and financial support.

Presented within MINA’s aged, parchment-inspired scroll format, the familiar market scene is transformed into a visual record of cultural memory. Warm earth tones, weathered textures, market stalls and atmospheric golden light create a sense of movement and lived experience while connecting present-day community life with the history carried through generations.

Through this painting, MINA honours women not simply as participants in the marketplace, but as contributors to Ghana’s economic, social and cultural story. The marketplace becomes both a place of livelihood and a symbol of community, strength and collective memory.

This painting forms part of the Ghana Heritage Scroll Collection, within MINA’s wider Ghana at 70 Heritage Collection, developed in anticipation of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
