Kwame Nkrumah Mausoleum – Accra reinterprets one of Ghana’s most important national memorials through MINA’s distinctive heritage scroll format.

The Kwame Nkrumah Memorial Park stands on Accra’s former Polo Grounds, the historic site associated with Ghana’s declaration of independence in 1957. The memorial complex was developed in honour of Dr Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana’s first Prime Minister and President, and opened to the public in 1992. Today, the mausoleum is the final resting place of Dr Nkrumah and his wife, Fathia Nkrumah, and remains an important place of remembrance, national identity and Pan-African heritage. In the painting, the monument rises vertically within an aged scroll, creating a sense of permanence, dignity and historical presence. The sculptural fountain figures, surrounding vegetation and human scale provide a connection between the monumental architecture and the people who continue to encounter the site.

The scroll format transforms the landmark into a preserved visual record, reflecting ideas of memory, documentation and the transmission of heritage across generations. Atmospheric blues, warm earth tones and weathered edges create a dialogue between past and present while reinforcing the commemorative character of the work.

Through this painting, MINA explores the relationship between national history, place, memory and identity, preserving the Mausoleum within a contemporary visual narrative.

This painting forms part of the Ghana Heritage Scroll Collection, within MINA’s wider Ghana at 70 Heritage Collection, developed in anticipation of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
