Jamestown Lighthouse – Sentinel of the Coast captures one of Accra’s most recognisable coastal landmarks within MINA’s distinctive heritage scroll format.

The present Jamestown Lighthouse was built in 1871 during the colonial period and served as a navigational beacon, helping guide ships along Accra’s coast and marking the approach to the harbour. Over time, it has become an enduring landmark of Jamestown, standing alongside the fishing community as a witness to the area’s maritime history, everyday life and continuing transformation.

The lighthouse rises above the historic Jamestown shoreline, surrounded by the everyday life of the fishing community, boats, coastal buildings and the movement of the Atlantic. The composition brings together architecture, landscape and community, presenting the lighthouse not simply as a landmark, but as a continuing witness to the history and transformation of the area.

Rendered within an aged, parchment-inspired scroll, the work reflects MINA’s wider exploration of heritage, memory, place and cultural identity. Warm archival tones contrast with the blue-green movement of the sea, while the lighthouse remains the commanding focal point—standing symbolically as a sentinel over Ghana’s coast.

This work forms part of the Ghana at 70 Heritage Scroll Collection, developed in anticipation of Ghana’s 70th Independence anniversary in 2027.
